Ranting ‘Mad Dog’ Gadaffi was doing his crust on Libyan TV last night. He has an amazing track record for bonkers speeches. I am a big fan of ‘The Bugle‘ podcast and they have documented Gadaffis ramblings at length over the years – particularly his 100 minute speech at the UN (listen to Episode 90 ‘Bring on the Crazy Gadaffi). It looks like he is on his way out, which can only be a good thing. But it looks like he’s going to try and take as many Libyans with him as he can.. what a bastard.

After my project drawing 31 Orcs back in Orc-tober I attracted the attention of some actual Orcs, all the way from Santa Cruz, California.

A Band of Orcs are a totally mental Death Metal outfit from the USA. And I have done them an Orc – Gronk their Bassist. You can read all about A Band of Orcs on their website, and for convenience I have included a Youtube of their video:

Quite some time ago I started a web comic, and then rapidly ran out of steam. But now I have discovered the delights of RSS and Facebook Page Spamming I am preparing to bring it back…

So I have stopped drawing Orcs. I have had a week off. But I have to keep drawing. Gnome-vember is not happening this year. But recently I was listening to In Our Time (great background noise for Orc drawing) and they were going on about fantasy animals, or more precisely Unicorns. People believed in Unicorns and their horns became commodities.

Jackalopes are more of an American obsession, and they passed into American folklore to the extent you could buy stuffed Jacklopes, or at least their heads. A rabbit with antlers, these beast are built on conflicting ideas. I wonder how Watership down would have ended up with a few of these in the mix?

Now the closest I have ever got to drawing one a unicorn was my rendering of the Patrick Swayze Tattoo. But Jackalopes have caught my imagination, so here is a first go. The Wikipedia article is pretty shabby and while there are sites out there they are from the dawn of the internet. But here are some handy bullets on Jackalopes:

• Jackalopes make their home in the American West
• They are agressive and fight with their antlers
• Jackalopes can mimic human sounds
• They use this to elude capture

An orc on a fiery hell horse… The proportions have gone all out of kilter in this one. I have learnt a lot about drawing fiery hell horses doing this one, and given the chance would do it again. But Orc-tober’s end is mercifully soon. Two more Orcs to go, and I’m f-orc-ing knackered..
